Noosa is a classic spot to learn. Main Beach sits right in town, lessons run there regularly, and the famous points along the national park give you something to aim for once you're up and riding. Here's what you need to know, from Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe pages and school websites checked on 17 October 2026.

Where beginners learn

Noosa Main Beach. Beachsafe rates Noosa 5 out of 10 and says it has "only beach breaks at the beach," with the safest water in the main patrolled area east of the groyne. It also warns about rips near and west of the groyne, and about the river mouth, which has shifting shoals and strong tidal currents. This is where most lessons happen, and you can see why.

Little Cove and the points. Little Cove is rated just 2 out of 10, but it's mostly a swimming and sunbaking spot. The breaks along the national park shore (Beachsafe lists Granite, Tea Tree, Boiling Pot, National Park and Johnsons) are the famous Noosa points. They're longboard heaven when they're on, but they're crowded, rocky and not where you have your first lesson.

Sunshine Beach and Peregian. Just around the corner, but a different story. Beachsafe rates both 6 out of 10 and calls swimming there "relatively hazardous owing to the persistent strong rips." Save them for later.

What lessons cost

When we checked, Go Ride A Wave was the only Noosa school showing prices directly on its site:

  • 2 hour introductory group lesson: $94
  • The Surf Course (multi-lesson beginner course): $220
  • Private 1.5 hour lesson: $240, plus $50 for each extra person
  • Kids school holiday sessions (ages 5 to 14): $79
  • SurfGroms program (ages 6 to 12): $280

Other Noosa schools take bookings by enquiry or through booking widgets, so check their sites for the day you want. For comparison, Go Ride A Wave's intro lesson costs more than the group lessons at Caloundra Surf School down the coast, where our Sunshine Coast guide found group lessons at $50.

Kids vs adults

Kids: the school holiday sessions for 5 to 14 year olds are the easiest way in, and the SurfGroms program for 6 to 12 year olds is a longer, structured option. Main Beach's patrolled area makes it a good place for younger kids to start.

Adults: the intro group lesson is the standard first step. If you're staying a few days, the multi-lesson course is better value than repeat single lessons. Private lessons make sense for nervous beginners or if you want to learn as a family.

What a first lesson looks like

Go Ride A Wave says all equipment is included in its lessons. Expect a beach briefing on the flags, the groyne and the river mouth (which Beachsafe singles out), some practice on the sand, then time in the white water on a big foam board.

A two hour introductory lesson, like Go Ride A Wave's, gives you enough time to get comfortable. Many people stand up on the white water in their first session. Riding green, unbroken waves takes longer, and that's what the multi-lesson course and private lessons are for.

Hire after your lesson. Once you've had a lesson, practising in the white water in the patrolled area of Main Beach is a great way to keep improving. Stay out of the way of surfers riding the points, though. Beachsafe notes this stretch of shore is crowded in summer.

Tips

  • Keep well clear of the river mouth. Beachsafe is clear about the tidal currents there.
  • Respect the points. If you paddle out at the national park breaks, stay out of the way of surfers already riding.
  • Book ahead in school holidays. Noosa gets busy.
