The Sunshine Coast is a ripper place to learn. There are patrolled beaches from Caloundra up to Coolum, several of them with usually low waves, and the cheapest group lesson we found in this whole series was here. Here's the rundown, from Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe pages and school websites checked on 17 October 2026. (Heading further north? We've done a separate Noosa guide.)
Where beginners learn
Kings Beach, Caloundra. Beachsafe rates Kings 5 out of 10 and calls it "a moderately safe beach under normal conditions." Permanent rips run against the rocks at both ends and get stronger once waves pass a metre, so the patrolled area in the middle is the place to be.
Dicky Beach. Also 5 out of 10. Beachsafe says it "usually has a low beach break," and that the patrolled area in front of the surf club is the safest spot. Low, gentle waves are exactly what you want when you're learning.
Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore. Rated 5 out of 10, with waves "usually 1 m or less." Beachsafe still warns about common rips, a strong permanent rip at the southern end of Alex, and deep tidal channels at the northern end of Maroochydore near the river.
Mooloolaba. Rated 5 out of 10 on Beachsafe.
Coolum. Rated 6 out of 10, with Beachsafe describing swimming as "relatively hazardous owing to the persistent strong rips." Better once you've got a few lessons under your belt.
What lessons cost
Caloundra Surf School publishes clear prices:
- Group lesson: $50 per student for 90 minutes
- Private lesson: $190 for one person, $100 each for two, $90 each for three or more
That $50 group price is the cheapest group lesson we found across all twelve towns in this series (alongside Kool Katz in Byron, which is $49 for groups of up to 20). Other Sunshine Coast schools take bookings through their own sites, so check those directly.
Kids vs adults
Caloundra Surf School runs lessons on weekdays and weekends, lists meeting points including Happy Valley and Dicky Beach, and confirms the location at least 24 hours ahead after checking the forecast. For kids, the sheltered, patrolled middle sections of Kings and Dicky are where you'll want them.
Families: the private pricing works well. Three or more surfers pay $90 each, which means a family can have an instructor to themselves without paying a fortune.
Adults: a 90 minute group lesson is a great taster. If it clicks, book a few more and ask about progressing to Alex or Mooloolaba with your coach.
What a first lesson looks like
Caloundra Surf School says it confirms your lesson location and time at least 24 hours ahead, once it's checked the forecast and surf report. That's a good sign. It means you'll be taken somewhere suited to the day, not just the most convenient beach.
Expect a beach briefing on the flags and rips, a few practice pop ups on the sand, then time in the white water on a big foam board. On the low, gentle waves Beachsafe describes at beaches like Dicky, standing up in your first session is a realistic goal.
Value tip. For a family or a group of mates, Caloundra Surf School's private rate of $90 each for three or more surfers isn't much more than a group lesson, and you get the instructor to yourselves.
Tips
- Check where your lesson meets. Caloundra Surf School, for one, confirms the beach the day before based on the forecast.
- Stay away from the river mouths at Maroochydore and Currimundi. Beachsafe flags tidal channels there.
