Byron is one of the best known places in Australia to learn to surf. We list 10 surf schools in and around town, which means plenty of choice and prices that vary more than you'd expect. Here's what we found when we checked the schools' own websites on 17 October 2026.

The beaches beginners use

Main Beach and Clarkes. Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe describes Main and Clarkes as "usually small beach breaks." The same page warns about strong longshore currents running toward The Pass and the seawall at Main Beach, so it's a spot to learn with an instructor and between the flags. Beachsafe rates the Byron Bay beach 5 out of 10 for hazard, and The Pass section 4 out of 10.

Wategos. Tucked under the Cape, Wategos is rated 4 out of 10. Beachsafe says waves "usually break gradually, spilling over the wide sand bar and patchy reef, producing a friendlier surf suitable for long boards and learners." It also says to be careful near the Cape, where strong currents can run even on calm days.

The Pass. It's famous, but Beachsafe calls it "world class long, tubing right handers" with crowds and a tricky take-off. Great to watch on day one, not great to learn on.

Schools pick the spot each day based on swell, so don't stress about choosing a beach yourself. Just know that Byron's beginner waves are real waves, and the currents are why lessons matter.

What lessons cost in Byron

  • Kool Katz Surf School: $49 per person for a group lesson (groups of up to 20). Private groups are $180 for three, $230 for four and $280 for five.
  • Black Dog Surfing: $89 for a one day, three hour group lesson, $170 for two days and $225 for three. Private lessons from $190 for two hours.
  • Byron Bay Surf School: $89 for a 2.5 hour group lesson, $215 for a three day package, $190 for a private lesson for one.
  • Soul Surf School: $95 for a half day group lesson, $185 for two days.

So a group lesson in Byron runs from about $49 to $95 per person, and one-on-one starts around $190. The big difference is group size and lesson length. Kool Katz is upfront that its cheapest groups are up to 20 people, while others run longer three hour sessions. Neither is wrong, but it's worth knowing what you're paying for.

If you just want a board, Byron Bay Surf School lists softboard hire at $35 a day.

Kids vs adults

Kids: Soul Surf School runs dedicated kids group lessons, starting at $89 for one lesson, and private sessions for 5, 6 and 7 year olds at $199 one to one. Its adult group page asks parents of kids under 13 to call first, which tells you schools take age seriously here. Check the minimum age before you book.

Adults: most Byron group lessons are built for adult beginners and backpackers. Multi-day packages (two to five days at Black Dog, Byron Bay Surf School and Soul Surf) are the best value if you're staying a few days, because the second and third sessions are where you really start standing up.

Families: a private group can work out cheaper per head than you'd think. Kool Katz's private of five works out at $56 a person.

Hire a board or book a lesson?

Plenty of people arrive in Byron, see the waves at Main Beach and think about just hiring a board. Byron Bay Surf School lists softboard hire at $35 a day, so it's tempting. Our honest take: book at least one lesson first. Beachsafe's notes on longshore currents toward The Pass and the seawall at Main Beach are exactly the kind of thing an instructor manages for you, and they'll show you how to read where the waves are breaking.

After a lesson or two, hiring a softboard and practising in the white water between the flags is a great way to keep improving between sessions. Several schools bundle that in: Byron Bay Surf School's private tuition includes an extra half day of free board hire.

Tips

  • Ask how big the group is and how many instructors are in the water.
  • Book a few days if you can. Progress comes quickly once you've had one session.
  • Read Beachsafe before you head out solo. Byron's currents catch out visitors.
