The Gold Coast is one of the easiest places in Australia to have your first crack at surfing. There are heaps of schools, lessons run most days, and the southern end of the coast has some genuinely gentle spots. The trick is picking the right beach and the right kind of lesson for you or the kids. Here's what we found, with every price taken straight from the schools' own websites on 17 October 2026.
Where beginners actually learn
Most Gold Coast schools pick their beach on the day, based on swell and wind, so you'll usually get a meeting point rather than a fixed spot. Still, it helps to know why some beaches get used more than others.
Kirra. Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe site rates Kirra 4 out of 10 on its hazard scale and says it's the safest stretch of that beach, "with the lowest waves and usually no rips close to shore." There's still a deep trough off the sand, so lessons stay close in.
Rainbow Bay and Coolangatta. Both sit at 5 out of 10. Beachsafe calls Rainbow Bay a popular swimming beach "owing to its protected location and usually low waves," and says Coolangatta is "moderately safe" thanks to usually low waves, though rips get stronger once waves pass about a metre.
Currumbin. Rated 6 out of 10, with persistent rips. Beachsafe says the safest water is at the inlet beach and the southern patrolled end, which is handy to know if you're there with little ones.
Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. These are long, open beaches rated 6 out of 10. Beachsafe notes "rips are present whenever waves are breaking," so it's lesson territory, not solo first-timer territory.
The short version: the southern end around Kirra, Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay tends to be friendlier, and wherever you go, stick with your instructor or swim between the flags.
What lessons cost
Here's what schools were charging when we checked.
- Currumbin Alley Surf School: group lessons from $55 for 90 minutes including a softboard, private lessons from $130.
- Kirra Point Surf School: group lessons $59 for kids and $69 for adults (13 and up). Private lessons are $159 for one person or $209 for two. Prices exclude a booking fee.
- Broadbeach Surf School: A$55 for a 1.5 hour group lesson (ages 12 and up), private lessons from A$140.
- Get Wet Surf School: two hour beginner lessons from $70.
- Coolangatta Learn to Surf: group lessons $55 to $66 for 1.5 hours.
- Go Ride A Wave Coolangatta: $94 for a two hour introductory group lesson.
- Cheyne Horan School of Surf: A$60 for a two hour lesson, or A$170 for three.
So a group lesson on the Gold Coast generally lands somewhere between $55 and $94 a head, and one-on-one coaching starts at around $110 to $159. Multi-lesson packs bring the per-lesson price down at most schools, so if you're keen, ask about those.
Kids vs adults
Most schools split age groups, and it's worth checking before you book.
For kids: Broadbeach Surf School runs a kids lesson for 8 to 14 year olds at A$55. Get Wet has a two hour intro for 10 to 13 year olds from $65. Go Ride A Wave runs school holiday sessions for kids aged 5 to 14 at $79, plus a SurfGroms program for 6 to 12 year olds at $280. Currumbin Alley has a school holiday program and a kids six week challenge.
For adults: standard group lessons are usually the way in. Kirra Point's adult group is for 13 and up, and Broadbeach's group lesson is 12 and up. Currumbin Alley also runs an adult six week surfing challenge and women-only sessions, which is great if you'd rather learn with a crew at your level.
Private lessons suit nervous beginners, families who want to learn together, or anyone who wants faster feedback. Kirra Point and Broadbeach both offer private sessions for all ages.
Tips before you book
- Ask what's included. Many Gold Coast schools include the board and wetsuit or rashie, but check.
- Ask how many students there are per instructor.
- Book a morning slot if you can. It's not a rule, but plenty of schools run their first lessons early.
- Don't paddle out alone at a new beach on your first day. Check Beachsafe for patrol times and hazards first.
