Cronulla sits at the southern end of Sydney's beaches, and for beginners its main beach has the lowest Beachsafe hazard rating of any Sydney beach in this series. Here's the rundown from Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe pages and school websites, checked on 17 October 2026.

The beaches

Cronulla Beach. Beachsafe rates it 3 out of 10, which is low for a Sydney surf beach. It says "under normal conditions Cronulla has a low shorebreak" and calls it "a popular beach with usually low waves." It also notes that on average 100 people need rescuing there each year because occasional rips can cause problems, so the flags still matter. There's a rock pool on the northern rocks if you want to warm up.

Greenhills. Beachsafe also rates Greenhills 3 out of 10.

North Cronulla, Elouera and Wanda. Rated 6 to 7 out of 10. Beachsafe says there are usually 10 rips along the patrolled section of North Cronulla and 10 more up toward Greenhills. These beaches produce good waves when the banks line up, but they're for when you've got a few lessons behind you. If you're unsure, there's a rock pool on the southern rock platform at North Cronulla.

Cronulla Point. Beachsafe describes the point reefs as "a solid, hard right for only the experienced" once the swell is over 2 m. Definitely one to watch from the rocks.

What lessons cost

Cronulla Surfing Academy publishes its private and kids program prices:

  • Private lesson: $170 for one hour for one person, plus $70 per extra surfer ($200 on Sundays)
  • Private group of four or more: $90 per person for 1.5 hours
  • Kids term programs: $350 for eight weeks

The academy also runs adult beginner and intermediate sessions and ladies sessions, but those prices are on its booking system rather than the page. Check there for current group rates.

Kids vs adults

Kids: Cronulla Surfing Academy takes kids from 5 years up. Its lessons page says beginner kids sessions run at low tide with a 1:6 coach to kid ratio. Term programs run for eight weeks at $350, split into 5 to 9 year olds and 10 to 16 year olds, with a $370 "next level" option for kids who can paddle onto their own waves.

Adults: the academy offers adult beginner sessions with "small group sizes so that we can personalise each session," according to its site, plus intermediate coaching and women's sessions.

Groups: if you can round up four or more mates or family members, the private group rate of $90 per person for 1.5 hours gets you a coach to yourselves.

Getting the most out of a lesson

A few things make a big difference to how much you get out of a beginner session at Cronulla or anywhere else:

  • Tide. Cronulla Surfing Academy runs kids' beginner sessions at low tide. Shallower, gentler white water is easier to stand up in, so ask your school how it times adult sessions too.
  • Ratio. The academy works to one coach for every six kids. Ask about the ratio for any lesson you book. The fewer people per coach, the more feedback you get.
  • Repeat sessions. One lesson is a taster. The term programs exist because surfing clicks with repetition, so if you or the kids enjoy it, book a block.
  • Know the beach. Spend five minutes on the Beachsafe page for the beach you're surfing. Knowing that North Cronulla usually has around ten rips along its patrolled stretch will change how you look at it from the sand.

Tips

  • Start at Cronulla Beach, not North Cronulla.
  • Ask whether your lesson is timed for low tide. The academy runs kids' beginner sessions at low tide.
  • Always stay between the flags, even on a calm day.
